Texas Constitutional Convention Updates

Summary of 11 Jul 1998 Meeting (Rough Notes)

A total of 47 fine-tuning motions were presented of which 40 carried. Most of the motions dealt with fine-tuning the wording of the constitution. The new constitution, as amended in this session, was tentatively adopted. The tentative adoption motion contained provisions for calling another session for a formal adoption and in the event that a major problem is discovered in the constitution.

A committee was established (TCRC Selection Committee) to find and pre-screen potential members of the Texas Constitution Ratification Committee (TCRC). Once the committee has located at least twelve appropriate potential members of the TCRC, the convention will be called into session to interview and select committee members.

The transition plan was finalized in the afternoon session.

The convention was adjourned sine die subject to the exceptions noted in the tentative adoption motion. It was noted that sessions may be called to interview, approve, or review the work of TCRC members or potential members.

A more complete set of notes will be posted shortly.
